Small Animal Dentistry
Maintaining adequate dental health is not only an important factor in maintaining teeth that will last a lifetime, but is also important in ensuring a healthy heart. Studies have demonstrated an association between heart disease and poor dental hygiene. While it is certainly useful to brush an animal’s teeth to help keep dental tartar at bay, there always comes a point in which there is enough dental calculus buildup to cause tooth root decay. I always compare the need to have regular dental cleanings with our mouth. Even though we (hopefully!) brush our teeth on a regular basis, we still have to see the dentist to maintain our teeth. At our hospital, we also have the ability to perform dental x-rays to better evaluate the overall health of your animal’s teeth.
